David Matthews – who set off in April 2019 from the Doncaster Samartians branch where he volunteers – was welcomed by branch director Kevin Hawkes on Sunday, April 25, alongside a number of other volunteers based in Denne Road.

Despite the Covid-19 lockdown putting his two-year schedule considerably behind, David is continuing on with the epic 6,000-mile journey for the charity which provides 24-hour confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

He told the Horsham and Crawley team: “I’ve had an amazing time so far and Horsham and Crawley is my 114th branch.

“My toughest few days were in Scotland, where I walked 48 miles in two days and just camped out in my little tent.

“So far I’ve been scorched by the heat in July and drenched to the bones and freezing cold during a stint in Wales. I’ve gone through five pairs of trainers and numerous pairs of socks. It has all been worth it through. I know the money I raise generates much needed funds for Samaritans.”

David has been a Samaritan for more than 12 years and has witnessed first hand the impact that offering a listening ear has. He has so far raised more than £13,800, including Gift Aid.
