Police are hunting for the motorists who threw a helpless dog out of a moving vehicle on the M23.

Officers said the female Lurcher Cross was chucked out the back of a vehicle, believed to be a van, as it was travelling northbound between junctions nine and eight, just north of Gatwick Airport.

A passing motorist stopped and picked up the pooch before calling Surrey Police.

Officers took her to a local vet where she was treated for two broken legs. She is now recovering and being cared for by an animal charity.

The incident took place at about 4pm on Thursday (March 2).

PC Sam Ainsworth said: “This really is a cruel and distressing incident and I’m appealing for anyone who knows who might be responsible to do the right thing and call us with information so we can bring the offender to justice. I’m sure there must have been other motorists who witnessed the events last Thursday and I would urge them to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should call Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference number 45170022317.

You can also use the online reporting system found at and enter the reference number in the ‘Additional information’ section.

Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
