Students remember the Holocaust with tribute

Saoirse Freeman and Jacob Iles-Chew put together a display on the ground floor of the Learning Resource Centre at Collyer’s.

Saoirse said: “What we wanted to achieve was a display which would represent the importance of individual experience.

We are so often taught about the Holocaust in terms of statistics and we thought by providing individual stories we could help makes someone’s learning experience more personal, thus making it more likely that they would feel a sense of responsibility to prevent such a horrifying act from happening again.”

The National Holocaust Day was started in the UK in 2001 and takes place every year on the 27th January. The date is significant as it was the day Auschwitz was liberated in 1945.

Saoirse added: “We also chose to provide the stories of perpetrators in order to show ordinary people’s capacity for evil when prejudice is allowed to corrupt society.”
