Steyning pupils take on big week of fundraisers

This was the first charity event of the year raising a fantastic £656 for ‘Christian Aid’ in support of the Refugee/Migrant Crisis.

Mr Nick Wergan, Steyning Grammar School Headteacher said: “I am always proud of how our students live out our ethos of ‘care, kindness and acceptance’. They have got off to a flying start raising money for such good causes – this is a real sign of their spirit and commitment.”

The ‘Induction Party’ is held every year to welcome new students to the College, giving all sixth formers a chance to get to know one another at the start of the new academic year, and provides a great opportunity to raise some valuable funds for one of this year’s chosen Sixth Form College charities.

The Colleges students had fun dressing up and dancing the night away. The theme of the party was ‘Disney’ and students dressed up in a plethora of costumes. The evening was a complete success due to the hard work of the Student Charity Committee who organised the event and particular thanks go to student DJ, BJ Oladokun who kept everyone dancing and student photographer Bryony Martin who took photos as students arrived on the red carpet.

On Friday September 25, for the tenth year running from 10.30-12.30 the Sixth Form College took part in this national event.

It was led by our Year 13 Liaison Committee and A Level Health and Social Care Students. Lemon drizzle, fruit cake, chocolate brownies and tiffin were some of the mouth-watering delights baked by sixth formers for this event. Boarding students also spent their evening enrichment time baking.

This year Marcus Maddison-White came from Macmillan in recognition of the effort and significant amount of money that this event raises for the charity each year.

An open invitation to all sixth formers, teaching and support staff was given. For a £2.00 donation, participants were served coffee, tea or hot chocolate and a range of homemade cakes.

The Sixth Form College Students would like to extend their thanks to local businesses and parents in Steyning, Henfield and Partridge Green who gave very generously this year, including donations and vouchers from Steyning Book Shop, The Steyning Post Office, La Maison Verte, Clock Tower Florist, many business in Cobblestone Walk, Chez Joel, the Pizza Oven, and the Bloomsbury Clinic also Jeremy’s Greengrocer, Jasmines florist and Village Care in Henfield and Chardonnay Restaurant Washington.

All these prizes made up a wonderful raffle. Our star prize is 2 pairs of passes for Spocktober Fest donated by Tulleys Farm.

With 525 students in the Sixth Form College and over 200 staff a significant amount of money was raised to help Macmillan provide vital support to those affected by cancer.

The students wanted to raise awareness of all forms of cancer and how it affects so many people and their families. Information from Macmillan highlighted that ‘in Sussex each day, 23 people find out the devastating news that they have cancer.

By 2030, there will be 121,400 people living with or beyond cancer in Sussex-that’s enough to fill Brighton and Hove Albion’s football stadium nearly four times.’

Macmillan Cancer Support is developing a new Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Brighton which will provide expert care and emotional support together with innovative ancer services for people affected by cancer across Sussex. Currently there are 187 Macmillan nurses and professionals working in the area. An amazing total of just over £1100 has been raised to fund local support.

The coffee morning was held in the Sixth Form Centre which was furnished in white and green, the MacMillan colours. Whilst enjoying the refreshments, musical accompaniments were performed by Sixth Form College students.
