The day was a huge success with presentations from over 50 guest speakers covering the fields of Science, Engineering and IT. Collyer’s students relished the opportunity to get an insight into the extensive range of careers on offer and the chance to listen and talk to experts from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Collyer’s Head of faculty for Mathematics and Science, and event organiser, Joe Brock explained: “The event has been running for a number of years now and is a fantastic opportunity for students to be given up-to-date, topical advice from those currently working in the industry.

“It is also a great way of introducing careers that students may have never previously considered. Careers advice is enormously important for our students and this event provides a relaxed atmosphere, allowing students to ask any questions they may have to those currently working in the industry.”

The vast array of speakers gave the students an invaluable opportunity to learn about the breadth of jobs available across different disciplines in the science world.

The event welcomed professionals ranging from forensic fire investigators to veterinary surgeons and clinical psychologists. They also enjoyed presentations from speakers working at top companies such as BP and McLaren.

Royal Holloway Senior Lecturer, Dr Howard Falcon-Lang, commented: “There are so many interesting jobs out there that at first may seem difficult to get into, but with a bit of guidance from those knowledgeable in the field, the sky’s the limit!”

The speakers included many ex-Collyer’s students, now studying and working in the areas of Science, Engineering and IT, who kindly gave up their time to come back and talk to the next generation. Amongst those was Elaine Simpson, who said: “It’s a brilliant idea and great to have the chance to give something back and provide Collyer’s students with information that they may not otherwise find out.”

Collyer’s Vice Principal Steve Nicholls said: “We have a superb faculty for Mathematics and Science and today’s event has highlighted this. It has been a fantastic opportunity for the students to speak to their role-models in the flesh.”

Collyer’s Principal Dr Jackie Johnston concluded: “We owe a huge debt of thanks to our visiting experts and to Joe Brock and his team for all of their hard work in making today possible. Well done to one and all!”
