Poppy Appeal launch at Cedar Court Care Home

On Thursday October 30 Cedar Court Care Home, Cranleigh held their third annual Poppy Appeal launch to raise awareness for the Royal British Legion’s campaign to support members of the armed forces and their families.

The launch had special significance this year as it marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, arguably the most devastating conflict in our history.

The event began with ‘The Last Post’ bugle call performed by Theo Golden of Cranleigh School who was accompanied by former Scots Guard and music teacher at Cranleigh School Bob Wilson.

Joining the residents, many of whom lost family members to both World Wars, were Lance Corporal Lucy Olivieri of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment and Mayor of Waverley, Liz Wheatley. Both guests delivered moving speeches emphasising the importance of remembering all the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to achieve the liberty we enjoy today. Those attending were also asked to spare a moment to think of the serving forces that continue to work tirelessly in hostile environments to keep our nation safe from harm.

LC Lucy Olivieri was very moved by the occasion and received a silver replica of a WW1 soldier’s uniform button, from resident Ann Budgen. Lucy said, “It was a real honour to join the residents at Cedar Court today and a memory that will always remain with me.”

Other special guests included members of The Royal British Legion, Cranleigh who were joined by local Merchant Seamen who displayed an array of flags to mark the occasion. Hymns and songs were led by singers Wendy and Tony Talis and the Mothers Union and keyboard player Marion.
