Chichester Festival is now celebrating its 60th year of running and has only missed a couple of years during World War II.

The students were entered into the poetry sections by their teacher, Emma Spires, and enjoyed varied success. On the first day Jonathan Finn gained 1st place in the class for 12-14 years, winning the Susan Brand Cup, with Polly Barwis in 2nd place.

This was followed by Carys Spratt gaining 1st place on the Sunday in the class for year 2 and under, winning the Noreen Ayling Cup No.1 and her sister Bronwyn Spratt gaining 2nd place in the class for year 4 achieving an ‘Outstanding’.

Alex Merry competed in the year 6 class gaining a ‘Very good with outstanding features’ as did his sister, Robyn Merry, in the year 3 class.

When asked, Emma Spires, who is the director and founder of Performing4u, said “I couldn’t be prouder of the students. They all worked extremely hard and deserved their success.

“Festivals provide a brilliant opportunity for children to perform and be creative, and any type of imagination and creativity that we can encourage in children has to be a good thing.”
