Neutering campaign launched in Horsham

Horsham & District Cats Protection are launching a neutering campaign.

Cats are prolific breeders and their offspring need to be speedily neutered or the population will quickly get out of control.

In fact, one female cat can be responsible for a staggering 20,000 descendants in just five years!

In spite of Cats Protection assisting the neutering of over 175,000 cats in the UK each year, there are still thousands of unwanted cats and kittens in animal charities up and down the country.

Jane Garland, Neutering Officer said: “In this economic climate we are finding that people on a low income are finding it a struggle to meet the cost of neutering their cats.

“The average cost of spaying a female in Horsham and the surrounding area averages at £85 which is a lot of money to find. Neutering is a safe, painless way of controlling the cat population. We can therefore assist by giving a voucher towards the cost of either someone’s male or female cat.

“We have had several instances this year of owners not realising that a mum nursing kittens, can still fall pregnant. This is because a female cat comes into season for a few days every 3-4 weeks between February & August.

“During these heat cycles, a queen will be very attractive to male tom cats which can detect her scent and will make great efforts to reach her often crossing busy roads.”

If you live in an RH12, 13 or 14 postcode, receive certain state benefits or are on a low household income, you have a limited opportunity to get your cat neutered for a fraction of the cost.
