Macmillan Cancer Support host Horsham reception for legacy giving

Macmillan Cancer Support hosted a reception at Sedgwick Park in Horsham, as part of a UK wide programme of events to highlight the importance of legacy giving, which makes sure no one in the future will face cancer alone.

The events have been developed after research found one in three (31 per cent) people in the Sussex find wills and death amongst the most difficult topics to discuss.

This is despite 36 per cent saying leaving a gift in their will would give them a sense of well-being*, as well as benefiting charities like Macmillan.

The reception, which was attended by Macmillan’s national Director of Fundraising, Lynda Thomas, encouraged local people to consider the importance of having an up to date professionally written will and the positive benefits of legacy giving, which allows an individual to make sure their loved ones and favourite causes are looked after.

The event was also attended by local Macmillan professionals, providing an opportunity for guests to hear about the charity’s work in the local area.

Lynda Thomas commented at the reception: “Here in West Sussex, amongst other things, Macmillan is giving over £340,000 to fund four Macmillan GPs, which includes a Macmillan GP and Macmillan Practise Nurse Facilitator in Brighton and Hove.

This is all thanks to the generous donations we receive from supporters – a third of which comes from gifts left in peoples’ wills.

This event is an opportunity to thank our wonderful supporters, whilst highlighting to guests the importance of having an up to date will and encouraging them to explore the positive benefits of leaving a legacy. Legacies are so important to Macmillan and make up more than a third of our funding. Large or small every gift makes a difference, we couldn’t do what we do without them.”

Macmillan Cancer Support exists to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
