LETTER: Wake up to the threat to Horsham

Pedro Martins in his recent praise of Horsham as having a great future is either displaying extraordinary sang froid or naivety.

Has he not heard about the immense proposed property developments north of Horsham – a consequence of which may be our now calling our town ‘Crawsham’?

Has he not heard of the possible second runway at Gatwick where an airport larger than Heathrow will appear?

Has he not been to those areas around Heathrow that are at the same distance from Heathrow as Horsham is from Gatwick and witnessed their ghastly urban sprawl?

Has he not read the latest report on NOx emissions from diesel vehicles that are up to nine times the permitted limit on vehicles already meeting the EU direction No 6 that was supposed to reduce them? Has he not understood the ghastly health implications of these emissions?

Does he not realise that this new proposed development and Kilnbrook Vale are going to be smothered in these emissions due to a predominantly south westerly wind direction here?

Has he not heard that the Airports Commission estimate that another 40,000 homes are needed around Gatwick with all the associated cars etc?

Has he not heard of the estimated extra 90,000 rail travellers to Gatwick, many through Horsham? Has he not heard of the already overcrowded trains on a line that cannot be expanded?

Has he not heard of the estimated 100,000 extra vehicles on the road daily plus freight for the new airport?

Does he not realise that Horsham is on one of the main routes from West Sussex, Hampshire and the West Country to Gatwick?

Horsham, if the second runway is built, will be utterly ruined. And don’t forget there are five more flight paths projected with many over Horsham and with aircraft roaring on full power at between 3,000 and 4,000 feet height – up to 80 decibels of hideous noise every minute from 05:50 EVERY DAY?

Wake up Pedro! Wake up Horsham! The future might be very much less attractive that is suggested.
