LETTER: Understanding the real issues

There is a saying ‘Some people are so heavenly minded, they are no earthly good!’

Is that why people have been saying recently the church shouldn’t get involved in politics?! As a CofE priest, not one person has ever asked me what my political views are...

However, I think it is vital that all people talk about how our country is governed, not least to make sure our MPs understand what the real issues are.

The church, on the ground in Horsham, has a part to play because we meet people from all over the community – all ages, all social backgrounds, and we dialogue with people of all religions and none.

We understand social problems because we run a night shelter, a food bank, a charity shop, we have chaplains in places like hospitals, schools, the Y centre, and we employ youth workers.

And yes, we pray. We pray for our leaders to promote justice and peace. You may disagree and think the church shouldn’t meddle, but then you are perfectly entitled to have your say too! Happy voting.

St Leonard’s Church and Parish Missioner, Horsham
