LETTER: Spiritual peace eases anxiety

We’re anxious in Horsham, according to the Office for National Statistics. The town has a new status as the most anxious place to live despite being consistently ranked as one of the best places to live (WSCT 31.10).

How can this be, we wonder? Despite the good schools and plentiful amenities, the abundance of restaurants and plethora of coffee shops, the excellent shops alongside characterful historic streets and buildings… what do we have to be anxious about?!

Well we know that even if we have all these things it doesn’t necessarily make for peace and happiness.

There are any number of reasons both physical and mental which cause genuine anxiety which even living in one of the best towns in the country doesn’t ease.

We are therefore thankful for medical expertise and counsellors to aid the physically and mentally anxious.

But let’s remember too the many Christian churches in the town who will explain how to receive spiritual peace, that is peace with God through Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, ‘I am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid’ (John 14:27). Paul writes to the Philippian church ‘Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done’.

Help is at hand for that - but you have to ask Him.
