LETTER: Reform and age old question

Perhaps my long-term membership of the Prayer Book Society indicates my traditionalist credentials - which leaves me confused with the latest proposed liturgical reforms within the Anglican Church.

Since women have been appointed Bishops within the Church of England - a move which does not cause me loss of sleep - I now read that God should also be referred to as, ‘Mother’ as well as the traditional form of ‘Father’ - as used by Jesus himself. What God - if he/she exists - thinks about all this is unknowable. And does it really matter?

But for me, such radical forms of address raise the age old question in my mind as to whether God created Man in His own image - or whether God is the creation of human beings down the ages - fearful of their own mortality.

And what about the traditional ‘Our Father’ - the one prayer used by many non-churchgoers in times of personal crisis?

Christianity in this 21st century is becoming increasingly questionable.

On a Sunday morning, sadly more people are to be found in the aisles of Tesco, Sainsbury’s or Waitrose than in churches of all denominations in Horsham. And who can blame them?
