LETTER: Promises made now disregarded

We were surprised and dismayed to read in the County Times of the council’s plans for the site which they are now calling ‘The Quadrant’.

The promises made to us, the members of the Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club by the council until recently, which we accepted in good faith, are now being completely disregarded.

The bowls club, which occupies part of the southern end of the site, was promised a new bowls facility (before the present one is demolished) in new premises which were to be built south of the present site.

Instead the plan now appears to be to demolish the present indoor bowls club and build a new leisure centre in its place with no guarantee of accommodation for a bowls club.

Our bowls club has been in these premises, managed voluntarily over the past 19 years by its members and considerable rent has been paid to the council for the occupancy of the building which the club has also maintained.

How can our council now plan to write off a successful popular facility which caters not only for its members of over 400 (aged eight to 94) but also for members of other clubs including Blind Bowlers, Alzheimer’s, Probus, U3A, and also a strong youth section and members of the general public who all enjoy bowling and friendship in the present building.
