LETTER: Privilege to have known true gent

I was very sad to hear that Bill Woodford had passed away (featured on page 26 of your edition dated 12/11/15).

I live away from Horsham now but a dear friend from Horsham Table Tennis Club (HTTC) rang to tell me the news and wondered as I knew Bill so well that I might like to write a few words in your letters column.

I have been associated with HTTC for more than 50 years now and fondly remember Bill as being on my committee as our treasurer.

He was a member of the club for many years, someone you could always rely on, a very quiet man, very thorough and just got on with the job.

He was a good player and played in a team with Ron Barnes, Chris Cranford and myself in the Crawley and Horsham League, always enjoying his table tennis as a very awkward defender.

He won ‘Club Person of the Year’ at least once for all he did for the club.

Off the table he had a very quick wit and a wonderful dry sense of humour. I was aware of his dedication to BBH Cricket Club but he did not hesitate when I asked if he could help on our committee. Likewise whatever event we held he would be there to support the club.

I well remember his love for Bristol Rovers FC, and if he had spare time in between his games you could always catch him doing a crossword or making up crosswords to send to national newspapers.

He was a truly nice gentleman and I feel it was a privilege to have known him. God bless you Bill, from all at HTTC.
