LETTER: Not yet ready for the scrapheap

Having lived in Horsham for 47 years, I have never before been so shocked and upset as I am now after your main article in the County Times regarding the latest proposals for the new leisure centre.

In particular there has been no provision made for the six rink bowls club as was stated in the agreed option in 2012.

I was widowed in 2008. I was in my early 60s and had always enjoyed playing sport but having had major leg surgery I was no longer able to participate in the various sports I had loved.

In 2010 I was encouraged to join Horsham Indoor Bowls Club. This decision completely changed my life. I was given a warm welcome and have met some wonderful and interesting people.

We have a chat, a laugh and we also bowl! It has given me a reason to drag myself out of bed on cold and wet wintry mornings. Without this interest I’m not sure what I, and many others like myself, will do.

The bowls club is not just about we ‘mature’ adults. The facilities are used by disabled and blind bowlers. There are many talented ‘younger’ adult members.

There is a thriving junior section, other outside junior clubs are invited to ‘have a go’ and visits to schools made. Junior sessions are coached and run by volunteer club members.

Does HDC really have the right to deny us all our exercise, mental stimulation and huge enjoyment?

I do hope HDC will seriously reconsider their latest proposal – we’re not yet ready for the scrapheap!
