LETTER: Jim could drive proposal forward

Councillor Jim Rae asked for alternatives when he faced angry residents at the meeting of North Horsham Parish Council (NHPC) on September 9th 2013 concerning the proposed North Horsham Strategic Development.

Many residents felt this was a bit rich and that it was his job to come up with alternative proposals. Horsham District Council in the past has always offered more than one option for the public to be consulted upon.

Councillors Dawe, Vickers, Croft and Rae offered one option – and as the public showed in their responses – a flawed plan in terms of planning law.

Now seven councillors have produced an alternative strategy such as councillor Rae was asking for.

He should read it with care ( Franceshaigh.mycouncillor.org.uk and on Twitter @Frances_Haigh), remembering that councillors are obliged in law not to vote in favour of a proposal that is not ‘sound’ in planning terms.

He now has an alternative proposal which meets those criteria – it is a way for him to come back from the wilderness with his electorate.

With his drive, determination, leadership and good sense he could (as he did with the football club campaign, and the anti-incineration fight) provide a strong driver in the council coming to a sound conclusion.

He would also regain the respect of many of his electorate – who do not understand his present stance.
