LETTER: HDC promises don’t mean much

How disgusting was the news of the imminent closure of Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club. I am 82, and have been a member from the club’s opening.

My late husband and I joined at the club’s inception, and enjoyed many years of our retirement together taking part in a past-time that we could play, in parity, together and that gave us exercise in our later years.

Since his death, I have enjoyed great camaraderie at the bowls club, but, thanks to this decision by HDC, I will now be confined to my four walls.

Do they really think that my friends and I of similar age are going to learn ice-skating?

The bowls club has members of all ages – from a thriving youth team to some members well past my age.

Horsham District Council promised us that we would still have our bowls in the new centre.

We have a great membership, and with all the new housing being built, for a population whose average age is getting older and older, I am sure this would grow even more.

Our members have always kept the bowls club in tip-top condition, with an excellent bar and catering facilities and now we have been rewarded like this. I don’t think HDC promises will mean much to anyone in the future.
