LETTER: Events highlight dementia week

Alzheimer’s Society in West Sussex North is encouraging people who have concerns about dementia to stop bottling it up this Dementia Awareness Week.

People are invited to attend an awareness raising event at the following venues, where there will be an opportunity to learn more about dementia and how Alzheimer’s Society can help.

Dementia Awareness Week events include:

Monday 19th May – Horsham Library’s Dementia Awareness Day with two ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions during the day. 10am to 3pm

Tuesday 20th May – Age UK Horsham and District at Lavinia House will host a Cream Tea followed by Alzheimer’s Society monthly Horsham Carers Support Group. 2pm to 4.30pm

Wednesday 21st May – Crawley K2 Leisure Centre with a day of free taster sessions including Swimming, Tai Chi, Indoor Bowls, Croquet, Badminton etc. and at 2pm a ‘Singing for the Brain’ session. 10am to 3.15pm

Thursday 22nd May – Upper Beeding Baptist Church Hub. An afternoon of Dementia Awareness and a ‘Dementia Friends’ session. 2pm to 3.30pm.

On Saturday 31st May Alzheimer’s Society is holding a concert at 7.30pm at Hurstpierpoint College, Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, BN6 9JS, to celebrate Dementia Awareness Week.

As well as the chance to enjoy a fantastic evening of music there will also be the opportunity to find out more about services available locally.

Dementia has replaced cancer as the health condition people fear most.

It is therefore no surprise that many people feel confused or even ashamed to talk about it. We all bury our heads in the sand from time to time but it is important to seek help.
