LETTER: Council split over North Horsham

I am sorry that The Ifield Society, in the person of Richard Symonds, feels so strongly about North Horsham Parish Council’s legitimate attempt to look after the interests of its 25,000-plus residents, by gearing up for a judicial review of the appalling plans to develop the area immediately North of Horsham.

Most residents of Horsham Town are aware of the severe short comings of the proposal. These include:

Downgrading one of the major routes from the South Coast to the M25 from a high speed access to a 40 mph bus route.

Building in the Strategic Gap between Horsham and Crawley.

Construction outside the defined built up area of Horsham Town into green field sites.

Major infrastructure shortcomings including sewage, water, electricity, gas, education provision and a host of others.

Huge disruption for all residents in Horsham and its District over the next 30 years.

Swamping Horsham Town with traffic, parking etc, leading to a severe downgrading of Horsham Town as a shopping, eating and business centre.

I also have considerable doubts about the ability of the developers to carry out the project successfully. Certainly the briefings and presentations I have attended were of a poor standard and low quality, with an air of ‘we haven’t considered that yet, but it will be okay on the night, trust me’.

Finally, over 3,000 residents have signed a petition expressing their strong disagreement to the concept itself.

Although I maintain an open mind still, all will have seen that HDC councillors are split on this project, with a small majority being in favour.

Some, currently supporting the concept, may be becoming uneasy about their position. So, I would urge all those who signed the petition to write individually, to their local councillor, expressing their views and urging him or her to vote against it when it comes before council shortly, to be finally accepted or not, as the way forward.
