LETTER: Care with charge of battery packs

I was saddened to hear of the fire at a care home in Chichester last month (‘West Sussex firefighters warn of e-cigarette dangers’, 13.03.14).

As one of the UK’s leading fire safety experts we strongly recommend that all care providers, and indeed all e-cigarette users, ensure that battery packs are not left charging unnecessarily.

Care home managers should also be aware that it is now a legal requirement for all care homes to install a wireless free swing door closer such as a Freedor which automatically closes a fire door when an alarm is activated, preventing the dangerous spread of smoke and fire.
