LETTER: Campaign for public services

Many people will have heard that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal known as TTIP has recently stalled due to all the amendments that have been proposed by different member states of the EU.

TTIP is an arrangement between the EU’s Commission, and the USA. It is being billed in Europe as a ‘free trade’ deal that will bring jobs and investment.

The truth is that it is about allowing American conglomerates the right to take over public services in European countries across the continent, including the UK.

This potentially includes any public service that is currently provided by a public body, local authority, or Government agency or organisation, including the NHS.

The UK is a, if not the principle backer of TTIP in the EU. It is hardly any wonder that other EU countries have the good common sense to object by tabling dozens of amendments to the Commission’s proposals.

Because so many people in the UK highly value our NHS, a People’s NHS has been set up to take the NHS out of the TTIP proposals.

David Cameron is reported to have said that anyone against TTIP is anti-American. I’m not anti-America or anti-American, but I am anti-Americanisation.

We have a long history in this country, a history that, despite its faults, many of us are proud of, and we wish to retain how it has developed, not see it dispensed with like it doesn’t matter.

Our public services, public bodies, services provided by local authorities and the NHS, are all part of what we need to retain if we are to have any hope of a distinct identity going into the future.

If you value our NHS, please contact the People’s NHS at http://www.peoplesnhs.org/ to support their campaign, and let your MP know where you stand.
