Great fun celebrating brilliant books

St Mary’s C of E School Horsham began their celebration of books by holding a Book Day on February 28th when all the children and staff dressed as book characters for the day and raised money for Book Aid International. This is a charity that takes books to children in Africa who otherwise might never see a book through their childhood. Sally Symes, the author, joined the school and worked with each year group. They had great fun reading her books and producing their own pop-up books. Meanwhile when the bell rang, all the children had to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). The day ended with parents enjoying a display of photos and potatoes. The children’s photos showed them reading in very unusual places, including upside down on a trampoline, and the potatoes, that the children had brought to school dressed as book characters, were as magnificent as the children themselves. The celebrations have continued this week with a Book Fair and ‘Goldilocks Day’. During the day, wanted posters, letters, newspapers, play scripts and flashbacks all brought the famous Fairy Tale to life. Finally, in one class, Goldilocks was put on trial and sadly found guilty of breaking and entering- she is still awaiting sentence. Hopefully she will be let out for future celebrations.
