Students enjoyed a fantastic day of activities which enriched their curriculum and prepared them for the future and the world of work.

Year 7 spent their first Focus Day participating in an activity entitled the Make it Real Game which placed them in a fictional world dealing with day-to-day decisions and challenging scenarios.

Meanwhile, Year 8 students had a more cultural experience.

For half of the day they learnt a new language with Modern Foreign Languages and partook in some language-related problem solving exercises whilst the other half of the day was spent participating in an activity named Speed Earth which placed groups of students into role-playing scenarios focusing on how they would run an island with a finite amount of resources.

In Year 9, students had a fantastic day at Chessington World of Adventures. Students learnt about media and publicity and took part in a workshop about how the advertising campaign was created for one of Chessington’s biggest rides.

They then experienced the range of thrills on offer at the theme park and considered how a new campaign could be created.

Year 10 were also engaged in two different activities across the day. For half of the day the year group were taught some cognitive memory skills by an agency specialising in student presentations to help them in preparation for their exams next year.

For the afternoon, the year group donned PE kit and partook in team-building, problem-solving games and activities on the field to prepare them for the busy year ahead. Whilst on the surface these activities seem poles apart, they both deliver key skills needed by our students to thrive at school.

With many of our students at the age where they will be driving soon, Year 11’s took part in Road Safety Awareness.

These events are organised and presented by the Safer Waverley Partnerships CRAG (Casualty Reduction Action Group).

This group is made up from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, Surrey Police and SCC with support from St John Ambulance.

Group Chairman, Crew Commander Trevor Coldman from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The days aim is to raise awareness of the potential dangers on the road and encourage attendees to consider the tragic consequences of speeding; driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and the illegal and improper use of mobile phones while driving”.

Trevor is keen to mention that: “Statistics are looking more promising as the killed and seriously injured on Surrey’s roads are falling each year:- 18 fatalities last year; 28 in 2011, compared to 67 in 2007.

These improving figures are due to a number of factors, though education here is key, especially of the pre and younger age driver groups”.
