Glebelands get stuck in to final Focus Day

Some students in Year 7 undertook a Carnival Day, learning the art of Samba drumming, choreographing their own dance and designing their own Brazilian masks.

The other half of Year 7 donned fancy dress (along with the members of staff involved) to create a short storyboard film. Students planned the storyboards, filmed, edited and then watched their own movies.

Year 8 students took part in one of two visits. Some wore their wellies on a Geography field trip to the River Tillingbourne collecting data and measurements to investigate how rivers change from source to mouth; whilst others went to the Science Museum in London to learn more about the origins of The World’s ground-breaking inventions.

Year 9 were engaged in two different activities across the day. One half of the year group were tasked with a replica building project honing their engineering skills in small teams whilst the other half of the year was hosted by the Maths department.

This activity, entitled ‘Changing Rooms’, gave students the opportunity to contextualise their Maths skills by designing a scale model room and working out the costings of equipment to furnish it using catalogues.

In Year 10, a third of the students experienced the Bradford Business Game, run by local charity Surrey SATRO. In small groups, the students ran a company for the morning, had to manage their finances and prove that they could create a product and make a profit in a fictional business scenario.

One third of the year group were shown some cognitive memory skills by an agency specialising in student presentations. These were then consolidated in English-focused afternoon sessions. The final third of the year group (made up of the prefect body) partook in team building games and activities on the field to prepare them for the busy year ahead.
