LETTER: Vision for site is refreshing

I was interested in the short report on page 2 of the April 14 issue of the West Sussex County Times re. the £1.3 billion proposed development of the former Shoreham cement works to potentially include up to 2,200 new homes, zero carbon transport and 4,400 new jobs.

It is an option that was suggested at the time of the local plan examination but rejected by the Inspector and HDC in favour of ‘dumping’ the substantive part of required new development on North Horsham, even though many aspects of that proposal e.g.rail links, take up of offices in the business park, proportion of affordable homes and the potential impact of a Gatwick second runway left it a seriously flawed proposal.

How refreshing that an enlightened group of visionary architects can see the potential of the former cement works site even if HDC and the Inspector could not.

Let us hope that it, or any alternative housing proposal for the brownfield site, is successful and achieves what the North Horsham proposals are unlikely to ever be able to deliver.
