LETTER: Risk of war is not reduced

That follows the EU founding fathers’ strange logic that parliamentary sovereignty must be removed, to avoid war. Yes it is worth reading that again.

Accordingly unelected EU officials have been emasculating the sovereignty of Parliaments, taking powers to themselves. They are driving us into a superstate, in which they have executive powers, are not accountable to us and have legal immunity.

Sadly history tells us that the demise of democracy with inadequate checks and balances, is likely to increase the risk of conflict, particularly where unelected rulers insist on continuously expanding their empire.

Jefferson summed it up very well when he said: “When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear government, there is tyranny.”

In fact with its expansionist ambitions, the EU poked the Russian Bear by encouraging the Ukraine to join the EU, thereby increasing the risk of conflict. As a House of Lords committee found, there was an element of sleep-walking into the Ukraine crisis and the ‘absence of political oversight was glaring’.

Of course in the long-run defence policy can’t remain detached from foreign policy, any more than the Euro can remain detached from EU Fiscal Union.

We know that the EU already has a mechanism in place to run foreign policy and that it wants an EU Army.

Having seen the total incompetence of the EU, in dealing with the crises of migration, the Eurozone and the Ukraine, who would be happy for unelected officials to get control of our armed forces, along with the British and French nuclear strike forces?

So the direction of the EU is clear and it is not reducing the risk of war. What it should be doing is restoring democracy, national currencies while shelving its expansionist ambitions, until we have resolved the problems that have already been imposed on us.

That might have been helped by ‘legally binding reform’, but the PM has given up on that and we must draw our own conclusions.

It is clear that if we do not leave the EU, then we will have little influence on when and where we go to war and we will see our Parliament reduced to the status of a local council.
