LETTER: Responding to user group need

We would like to correct the recent misleading article reference to '˜using indoor athletics space to store garden maintenance equipment' at a new leisure centre to be built at Broadbridge Heath (County Times July 7).

Following structural engineering investigations it was concluded that retaining part of the end section of the tube facility was viable and provided a cost effective option for storing specialist equipment.

Storage (which cannot be provided inside the new leisure centre) is required not only for athletics equipment but also for grounds maintenance equipment used to maintain the outside track and athletics field and other outside areas such as multi use games areas.

The athletics equipment that needs to be stored includes a wide range of competition and general use equipment for the full range of athletic disciplines. It has to be secured safely and includes some large items such as pole vault stands and poles, hurdles, shot putts and javelins.

Maintenance equipment required to keep the track and field elements in good condition include a track sweeping machine (similar to a road sweeper), a tipper truck, a multi blade ground slitting machine, a sit-on mowing machine, a line marking machine, a range of mowers and a full range of turf maintenance and general maintenance equipment.

Originally we did not propose to retain any of the tube, but the user group asked if an area could be provided on site for the storage of athletics equipment and a toilet facility. This is what we have achieved to meet their needs.
