LETTER: Recognition for iconic feature

I take exception to Barbara Thomas' letter regarding the Shelley Fountain (WSCT 5/5/16) '“ as I have to similar letters over the years.

Everyone has a right to express an opinion, but in ‘Never suitable for Horsham’ that’s her opinion.

What I object to is the next bit ‘...and the people just did not like it, it’s as simple as that’.

Sorry, but that is not my opinion or the opinion of many other people! I liked it when it worked and still find it a striking feature even though it no longer works.

I was horrified to read that it would cost £40,000 to dismantle and remove – especially as I think the money spent on West Street ‘improvements’ was a total waste of money, resulting in a boring street scene needing height and colour, ie. trees and flowers (but that’s my opinion and I imagine there are plenty of people who approve of the current street scene! - so I mustn’t speak for others!).

I wrote to HDC hoping my personal views/suggestions could be aired when the council were discussing what to do with the Shelley Fountain.

I suggested leaving the Globe in place and planting four slow growing miniature cyprus-like trees (NSE&W) with phormiums (the longer the better) to give the impression of falling water.

Small shrubs such as parahebe, or seasonal planting could go in the satellite basins.

The Globe would remain as a central iconic feature rising through structural plants and there would be no need to spend thousands of pounds in demolition. As the years passed the planting would absorb the Globe into a living whole.

Now the decision has been taken I just hope the council will find somewhere that would like it and recognise it as an iconic feature.

Even if it does not work I still think it is a very striking feature – but I do not assume that everyone agrees with me!
