LETTER: Kindness from generous people while on walk

Kindness from generous peopleOver the weekend of July 9 and 10, my wife and I walked from Epsom to the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation at West Grinstead.

Late on the Saturday night, my wife started to feel very tired and was struggling to walk and so we decided to hitch a lift to Horsham.

A young couple, having an evening away from their children, gave us a lift which took them well out of their way. On Sunday morning, a woman we met offered to take us to the Downs Link path to begin the walk to West Grinstead.

Later that day, we needed to return to Horsham to get a train back to our children and a man in a tearing hurry to meet his daughter whom he had not seen for nine months also stopped and gave us a lift.

Through your pages, I simply want to thank these anonymous and extraordinarily generous people for their kindness. Every one of them had good reason NOT to stop but they all did so.

In these rather gloomy times, it is reassuring to know that there are people who are willing to put others first no matter what the personal cost.
