LETTER: Just another concrete jungle

I would like to comment on the County Times story about the possible relocation of Wilkinsons in Horsham.

As a loyal customer for many years, I and my family have found it a most wonderful store to shop in and it gives a positive start to shopping in Horsham. So a new relocation will have to be sensitively thought out, which requires ‘joined up thinking’.

Sadly HDC and the expensive consultants they employ, have failed to understand you can’t keep reinventing the wheel!

In the past 30 years, it has destroyed most of the character of Horsham with its constant redevelopment, funded by the demise of our green fields.

HDC have failed to grasp it can no longer afford to cater for the ‘snob’ section of the community, because they alone will not keep the centre of Horsham afloat. It needs to do something that caters for the majority, not the minority.

This is why Horsham has failed to attract an Aldi or Lidl. Either of these stores would increase the interest in Horsham. Another miserable failure, by those responsible for the community, was missing out on the old Novartis site as a site for a much needed hospital. I believe they never even did a feasibility study. But of course we all know, more money is to be made out of building houses, than looking after the health of the community.

Like many of your readers, I have seen Horsham decline from a good place to shop and now it’s just another concrete jungle replicated across the country in towns and cities. The old adage seems to be, one size fits all and to hell with the consequences.

Remember the elephant in the room these days is the internet and as it improves every day, it doesn’t need expensive disruptive building work, fed by gridlocked roads!
