One year on from the heart-breaking image of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi being washed up on the beach, we in Horsham Amnesty group will be taking a stand in support of refugees at an important '˜Refugees Welcome' march in London on September 17.

Over 21 million people have fled war and persecution, the great majority to the world’s poorer and often less stable countries.

This is one of the biggest humanitarian emergencies of our time.

So far, the UK’s response has been pitiful, accepting only one per cent of the world’s refugees, despite being one of the richest countries in the world.

So far this year, as in 2014 and 2015, more people have drowned crossing the Mediterranean than have been resettled by the UK.

Together with other leading refugee and human rights charities we will be calling on the UK Government to be on the right side of history; to accept its fair share of refugees into the country and to ensure that they can arrive here by safe and legal routes.
