LETTER: Charges will drive business away

On Thursday 28th January Horsham District Council put another nail in the coffin for Horsham town centre by agreeing to Sunday parking charges.

Often I use Sundays to pop into the town centre to carry out small errands or take my son to Horsham Park on a Sunday safe in the knowledge it’s not going to cost me a minimum of £1.60 for the privilege, something many Horsham residents will understand and sympathise with.

Whilst I am proud of our town and can often be found in the coffee shops working or buying from local business whenever possible, I am concerned when faced with parking charges potential visitors to Horsham will simply go to Crawley where there is a larger range of shops, albeit not many independent shops, noting the parking charge is only £2.00 all day.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for towns to attract visitors and without visitors to Horsham the local economy will no doubt suffer and business will be less likely to set up in the town, then what will HDC do, increase parking charges even further to offset the loss to the local economy?

What I find the most insulting about this sorry affair is the comment from Cllr Ray Dawe that ‘£1.50 is a trivial amount of money to individuals but is very important to the council’.

It might not be trivial to Cllr Dawe but to many already hard-pressed people out there £1.50 is just another charge to an already growing list.

I implore the residents of Horsham District to write to your local district councillor and voice concern over this action by the Conservative led cabinet.
