Crawley Town rewarded after tough week on the road

That was forgotten over the last week.

Obviously the Football League did not consider supporters when they scheduled Crawley’s visit to Morecambe for a Tuesday evening.

A hardy, perhaps foolhardy, 33 souls made the trip but to no avail as a below-par Reds lost 3-1, although the final scoreline flattered Morecambe.

On Saturday the trip was even longer but the weekend allowed 87 to lend their voice to the Reds’ cause at Victoria Park in distant Hartlepool.

They no doubt considered their effort well worthwhile as the 2-1 finish brought Crawley’s fourth win in six matches.

It is a no-brainer for the hardcore fans that the result is all-important whilst a win in style is merely a bonus.

As Crawley climbed to 17th place in League Two it might be considered reasonable to wonder whether the rest of the season will prove more fulfilling.

It is understandable to view any upcoming fixture in terms of league placings and current form.

That could suggest optimism as York City are four places and six points below Reds at present.

If you avoid the obvious pitfall of dismissing the Minster Men’s challenge then a reasonable straw to grasp is the way we recently overran basement boys Newport County.

Achieving a ‘banker’ win has hardly been our forte in recent campaigns.

It is essential that we deliver the results our play has merited.

Mark Yates is fond of pointing out that there are no easy games in this division and that is not a simple cliché it is very much the real picture.

I won’t try to predict what will happen this season as there are so many imponderables but I can see what the club needs.

By now we will know the draw for the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.

Crawley Town definitely need another cup run that generates good publicity and, importantly, extra cash.

Two rounds have to be navigated before the chance of drawing one of the big boys in Round Three arises.

Renewing our reputation as giant-killers would be nice but we really need a share of some significant gate money.

Given my earlier thoughts about travelling long distances I could view the prospect of an away tie against well-supported Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium as pretty much a win win situation.
