So far the scheme has provided a new car park at Haywards Heath station, new retail and restaurant units, an improved transport hub at the station and an enhanced public realm.

Peter Hughes, Director at Solum, said: “The regeneration of Haywards Heath Station has been widely supported by the community and has transformed this area. Bringing in Waitrose as the anchor tenant illustrates just how attractive station areas are for the UK’s leading retailers. Our vision is to reimagine the way that railway land is used, so that stations can become exciting new destinations that offer much more to local communities.”

Angie Doll, Southern’s Passenger Services Director said: “This project has already brought tremendous benefits for our passengers. The superb new multi-storey car park with direct access to platforms, and better interchange facilities at the front of the station have meant that getting to and from the station is much improved. The new Waitrose store will, I’m sure, prove to be a great asset to the station for years to come.”

The store was officially opened by Sir Nicholas Soames.

As well as the usual food and grocery products it will also includes a wine bar, a sushi bar and the company’s new ‘Kitchen concept’ offering breakfast, lunch and dinner options which will be freshly prepared throughout the day.
