Paula, in the Bishopric, will be opening its doors to the public for the first time this Saturday (February 7) offering customers the chance to experience different foods and cultures from countries across Eastern Europe.

The new grocery store has been set up by Paulina Szaruga and her sister Iwona Paszkiel-Chamera who both lived in Poland for most of their lives before moving to England.

Paulina said it was her dream when she moved to the country to set up her own Eastern European store.

She said: “This was my big dream when I first came to this country. I have always wanted to open an Eastern European food shop. I am very excited.”

Zack Sadki, special adviser at the shop, added: “She has been saving up for the past five years to set this up and has sacrificed a lot to get here. We are very proud of her.”

The shop will be offering customers a chance to buy fresh Eastern European treats such as breads and pastries, cooked on site every day, as well as a selection of specialised meats and Polish sweets and chocolate.

Zack said: “We want local people to come in and get a flavour of Eastern European food. Most people go on holiday and come back with lots of food as they can’t get it here. This shop now means they can.

“This is the first shop and we thought Horsham would be an ideal place. Horsham has such a good community and they are always open to experiencing new food and different cultures. Our prices are very cheap as well.”

Currently most of the products in the shop are delivered directly from Poland. But Paulina and Zack said the shop is always open to new ideas and they eventually plan to expand their range by offering food from Romania and Hungry.

Zack said: “We are not like the big supermarkets who have specific food ranges. We can cater to all kinds of customers and are open to any suggestions. We have had a lot of interest all ready.”

Although most of the products will be Polish, Zack emphasised there will be English translations so customers know what they are buying.

For the first week the shop will be offering a special promotion with customers getting a free taster of some of the meats and pastries available.
