The helpline will provide information about units of alcohol in drinks and what qualifies as ‘risky drinking’

It will also provide advice and support on how to reduce unit intake and callers can choose to receive follow-up calls from the service, providing moral support.

The helpline can also direct people to relevant services, if required, and can offer advice to people who may also be concerned about a friend or relative.

Regularly consuming more than the equivalent of one large glass of wine on five nights of the week puts women at risk of developing health problems.

The same is true of consuming two pints of beer over the same period for men.

Christine Field, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “It’s very easy to go home after a hard day and reward ourselves with an alcoholic drink and many of us probably aren’t aware of the risks we are taking with our long-term health and wellbeing.

“We hear a lot about binge drinking and the dangers it poses – but we don’t often think about some of the other issues which may be putting our health at risk.

“That’s why it’s so important to talk more openly about this and to find out what we can do to lead healthier lives.”

All calls to the Alcohol Advice Line are confidential and callers can choose to remain anonymous.
