Two Roffey mums’ fight for safe and up-to-date play equipment at a 25-year-old children’s park has seen the council release three possible plans for public comment.

Lynne Tumber and Michelle Downey, both from Sycamore Avenue, launched Beech Road Small Children’s Park Community Group, which was featured in the County Times in October.

This week Horsham District Council published three design sketches on their Facebook page, and while they have found £24,000 of funding, the schemes need around £46,000.

Mrs Tumber said: “It’s nice to see that they are doing something although it’s not quite as much as we wanted, as they have not got the funding.

“They suggested a community group get together and apply for the funding.”

She says the current facilities are unused, out of date and unsafe, and they need something that will make kids want to play outdoors.

She explained: “The better the equipment the more likely they will want to go out and use it.”

They are appealing for anyone with time or expertise to join the group, who might be able to help with the funding applications.

The public can view the three designs on HDC’s Facebook page, and can comment by emailing

Jonathan Chowen (Con, Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead), cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said: “I hope that anyone with an interest in the play area in Beech Road takes this opportunity to have their say on these new and exciting plans.

“It will be great to see how this play area develops in the future and how these much needed improvements will make for a better environment for the local children to enjoy.”
