Multi-million pound plans to renovate the waste and recycling depot at Hop Oast have been approved by planners.

Horsham District Council agreed to redevelop the site back in April 2015 at a cost of around £4.5m to make facilities fit for purpose and

The planning application for the depot off Worthing Road between Horsham and Southwater was approved by HDC’s development control north committee last Tuesday (May 10).

John Chidlow (Con, Southwater) said: “I welcome this application, I thoroughly support the officers’ recommendation [to grant permission].

“Personally I think this is long overdue.”

Ian Howard (Con, Southwater), acting chairman of the committee, added: “I also wholeheartedly agree with this. It’s a good step forward for our waste disposal department.

“It needs to be set up because there’s more lorries to service and it’s good they can fit it in the same area.”

The site is between the park and ride and the Shell petrol garage. The two current buildings would be replaced with a single purpose building including a mechanics workshop, three internal bays to service the lorries, offices, staff breakout areas, as well as shower and toilet facilities.

The existing oil tank will be removed and replaced with a new 50,000 litre fuel tank to be buried underground and a fuel dispensing pump.
