It’s a Knockout - fun day to support The Gambia

Organiser Ros Hoare told the County Times that the proceeds will go to HELPING (Help for Education and Local Projects IN the Gambia), a charity she has been involved with for three years.

“My friend and I, having both retired as teachers, have been twice to the poorest part of Gambia visiting schools, training teachers, making and providing resources and lesson plans to give the children lucky enough to attend school, the best possible experience,” she said.

“This charity also raises funds to invest in healthcare in the poorest villages, providing mosquito nets, clean water and more relevant first aid training. My daughter, an A&E nurse, has also visited twice, taking vital equipment which has been bought and donated thanks to the charity. In both areas, whilst huge progress has been made over the years since the charity began, there is still so much work to be done.

“On September 6th this year, we are holding an ‘It’s a Knockout’ tournament in association with Peach Entertainments (Billingshurst). We hope to have ten teams of up to ten people taking part in a series of wacky inflatable obstacle races and competitions.

“There will be a bar and refreshments available. Parking and entrance will be free to spectators but teams taking part will pay £25 a head.

“It promises to be a fun day for all involved and we hope to raise some much needed funds for future projects.”

The Gambia is Africa’s smallest country, following the course of the Gambia River downstream to the North Atlantic coast.

High levels of international debt and a lack of good soil for growing crops leave the country dependent on foreign aid, with around one person in three living below the international poverty line.
