Horsham’s pancake racers under starter’s orders

Businesses, charities and other organisations are invited to enter a team of four flippers, preferably in fancy dress, to compete in the sixth annual Horsham Charity Pancake Race in the Carfax.

With children’s TV star Dave Benson Phillips acting as race commentator, the day will include a mascot egg and spoon race, children’s pancake races, and a kids activity marquee.

All proceeds will go to charities, with Chestnut Tree House, the Dame Vera Lynn Trust, St Catherine’s Hospice, the Springboard Project, and Set4Success all receiving funds last year as a result of being nominated by the winning teams or being the most nominated charities of the competitors.

Participating charities will also be promoting themselves at the event.

The event is being organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham in partnership with Horsham District Council.

Highways maintenance company Ringway, based in Springfield Road, is the main sponsor of the event, while Sainsbury’s will be supplying the pancakes, and trophies along with Waitrose, the Non-Stop Party Shop, Rawlison Butler, Southwater Hearing Centres and Horsham Rotary Club. .

There will be cups and prizes awarded to the winners on the day, including one for the best team fancy dress, one for the Best Over 40’s Team, one for the Winning Charity Team, one for the Best Individual Fancy Dress, one for the best flipper and one for the overall winning team.

The closing date for entries is Friday February 13, which will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Currently six charities have entered along with many businesses, which include RSA, Sainsbury’s, The Music Bus, Spirit FM, South Lodge Hotel, Britweb, and many others.

Meanwhile children’s pancake races will be held from 1.45-2.35pm with Sugar & Snow, based in Piries Place, sponsoring.

There will be three children’s categories, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-11.

There will be a £1 Entry Fee and entries are limited.

As part of Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign there will also be a ‘Wear your Worst Wolly’ competition at 3pm.

There are three categories for children – Age 5-6, 7-8, and 9-11, plus a category for worst adult creation. Dave Benson Phillips will lead the judges and present the prizes.

Meanwhile a free children’s activity marquee will run from 10am-3pm with a number of charity stalls, activity marquee where kids can make their own woolly bobbles, decorate their jumpers, or create their own pancake recipe.

There will also be face painting and fresh crepes for sale.
