TWO Horsham GPs are running the London Marathon on Sunday for their favourite charities.
Dr Ann Williams, who works at Holbrook Surgery, is running in memory of a former patient Abigail, an eight-year-old girl who died last year from neuroblastoma.
In her fifth marathon, Ann is raising money for the Neuroblastoma Society.
Describing Abigail, she said: “Throughout her illness she was always cheerful, smiling and made everyone around her laugh.
“Last year, through the charity ‘Make a Wish’ she chose to go riding and muck out a stable.
“This is a rare childhood illness with a poor prognosis, the Neuroblastoma Society helps fund British research and support the families - please help them to find a cure and donate to this charity.
“So far I have raised £1,102 and I want to thank everyone who has donated so generously.
“This is my fifth and last marathon - I have done three London marathons and one New York.”
Fellow GP Dr Mark Chopin, from Courtyard Surgery, is raising money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
Mark said: “The Anthony Nolan Trust was set up in he 1970 because the boy that it’s named after had leukaemia and his parents were trying to trace a bone marrow donor for him.
“I am running the London Marathon to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
“I remember his story and the desperate search to find a suitable bone marrow donor to cure his leukaemia and save his life from my school days.
“Unfortunately this search failed and he died of his illness.
“I find it amazing and wonderful that his mother set up the trust to help others in the same situation.
“I approached the trust ten years ago to volunteer to be a potential bone marrow donor. Unfortunately I was turned down on the grounds of being too old as I was over 40.
“Now at 52 I have decided in a mad moment to run my first marathon and ask my friends to help me raise money for this worthy cause.”
