A Horsham-based children’s publisher has won an award for its book the ‘Game of Stones’.
Maverick Publishing enjoyed the success in last week’s Sheffield children’s book award.
Written by Rebecca Lisle and illustrated by Richard Watson, the book won the picture book category from a shortlist of Daisy Doodles (Oxford University Press) and Perfectly Norman (Bloomsbury).
Both Rebecca and Richard attended the event, along with Maverick’s managing director, Steve Bicknell and editor, Kimara Nye.
Steve said: “This is our first major award in the past nine years of children’s publishing.
“We have been ‘knocking on the door’ for some time now and this success will spur on our very ambitious expansion plans. Maverick is very fortunate to have a very talented and dedicated team in Horsham, which we hope to expand in 2019.”
The award is voted by children from 222 school groups in the Sheffield area and several hundred children attend the actual ceremony. Past winners have included Michael Rosen, Kes Gray, J K Rowling.
Game of Stones is the second book featuring the Stone Age character ‘Pod’ and his inventions. A third book ‘I, Pod’ is due to be published in April 2019.
