PUBLIC lavatories in Swan Walk, Horsham, could be in line for fame after being nominated in the Oscars of the toilet world - the annual British Loo Of The Year Awards.
But the shopping centre toilets are up against stiff competition as they are one of 1,300 nominations nationwide for the top title.
he winners will not be revealed until a glittering awards night at a hotel near Kenilworth, Warwickshire, in December.
The awards - which aim to ‘encourage the highest possible standards in all types of away-from-home toilets’ - have been going since 1987 and are promoted by the British Toilet Association whose head office is in Pondtail Road, Horsham.
Swan Walk Centre manager Gill Buchanan said: “We are delighted that Swan Walk has once again been nominated for this prestigious national award.
“Our cleaning team on site work very hard to ensure the cleanliness of the toilets at all times, undertaking checks throughout the trading day and deep cleaning all areas at regular intervals.
“The Swan Walk toilets are very heavily used and are in an enclosed area both of which offer many challenges for the cleaning team to overcome – something they do day in and day out to ensure that the standards remain at their highest not just in the toilets, but throughout the centre.”
She said that the loos had won a four star award in the British Loo Of The Year Awards every year since 2007 ‘and are looking to continue this success in 2011 and beyond’.
Meanwhile, director of the British Toilet Association Mike Bone revealed that last year’s winners of the prestige title were the pub chain JD Wetherspoon. “Not everyone loves Wetherspoon’s, but they have fantastic toilets,” Mike said this week.
