Greenway repairs will require road closure

Martin Peters, a resident of nearby Churchill Avenue, contacted the County Times earlier this month, challenging anyone to find a road with a worse pothole problem.

“It is disgusting and l feel unsafe especially as it is in a road where there is a school,” he wrote.

“There are so many potholes in this road and there is probally not more than a 4-5 metre stretch of Tarmac between the potholes.

“As you drive down this road all the Tarmac chippings from the pot holes are flicked up on to parked cars and on to car windows, l believe this has caused damage to the wheels on my car, l have emailed West Sussex County Council about this but as yet l have had no reply.”

He added that there was another bad pot hole on the Albion Way roundabout, and questioned why money from road tax is not spent on making the roads safer.

This week, Mr Peters said he had heard from someone who has lived in Greenway for more than 40 years, and had never known it to be in such a poor state.

“Do we have to wait for someone to get injured or cars to be damaged before this is addressed,” he asked, adding: “l would take photos of the surface / lack of surface to this road but there are so many holes the road would need to be closed so photos could be taken.”

Cris Duval, of Spencers Road, Horsham, did manage to get some photos.

She also said the road is in a bad condition, making sections of it completely unsafe for a motorbike.

A statement from West Sussex County Council said: “The potholes on Greenway do not meet our intervention levels. The problem is delamination of the road surface material (although the actual construction of the road underneath is sound).

“Greenway was assessed for patching works, but the extent of the problem areas were too big.

“It needs to be completely resurfaced and is currently being considered for inclusion in this year’s programme of works.

“Five potholes on Albion Way have been repaired by our contractor this week.”
