Garage fire in Billingshurst '˜started deliberately'

A fire that damaged garages in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst last night is thought to have been started deliberately, according to the fire service.

Three engines from Billingshurst, Horsham and Henfield were called to the blaze at around 5.30pm last night, which started in a commercial garage behind the shopping area.

Crews remained on scene until 10pm fighting the fire that left one garage was completely destroyed and other garages smoke damaged, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

No shops are listed as having been damaged by the blaze, and initial reports of a restaurant being on fire were incorrect, a fire service spokesman said.

An aerial ladder platform was called in from Worthing to help and crews used six breathing apparatus, two hose reels and ladders to tackle the incident the spokesman added.

The fire deemed to have been started deliberately and the incident has been handed over to police, he said.
