THE FOUNDER of the annual October funfair in Horsham’s Carfax said it is a ‘crying shame’ that this year’s event was probably the last.

Phil Read told the County Times that he had been informed by Horsham District Council that the Old Mill Steam Fair was ‘not right for Horsham’ and that putting on next year’s event on a Saturday was ‘not up for discussion’.

Hundreds of children flocked to Horsham with their families last Thursday, Friday and Saturday to enjoy an old-time carousel, a giant ferris wheel, and the popular chair-o-planes – popular low cost rides creating a colourful centrepiece for the Horsham Town Festival.

However, Mr Read said town centres manager Garry Mortimer-Cook, a council officer, had already told him to come up with a plan to run it on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but not on Saturday next year.

“But that is just not workable because Saturday is our busiest day,” Mr Read said.
