Freeze on council tax recommended

ON January 27, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet recommended to full Council that the District Council tax remains unchanged for the year starting April 2011.

If this is agreed at the full Council meeting on February 16, the annual Band D Council Tax charge will be £135.54 and the special charge £23.72.

Speaking this week, Gordon Lindsay, Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets at Horsham District Council, said: “The Council has had to deal with the twin challenges of producing a budget which minimises the impact on services delivered to the public while coping with a significant reduction in one of its main sources of income - the grants provided by the government.

“In particular, we have been able to maintain at the present level discretionary rate relief and other grants for charities, sports clubs and other similar organisations.

“The Cabinet has also recommended a balanced budget which does not draw on reserves to cover day to day expenditure and has responded to concerns raised in public consultation about possible service reductions.

“Significant challenges still remain but the Council is determined to maintain its strategy of achieving a balanced budget while minimising the impact on the delivery of key services.”
