Children are being invited to attend free sessions at swimming pools in Horsham and Billingshurst this summer to help them learn how to keep safe in the water.
The free sessions are being held as part of National Drowning Prevention Week and will teach youngsters basic safety advice, first aid and CPR skills as well as fun games and rescue activities in the pool.
Drowning Prevention Week is a national campaign run by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS) and aims to reduce the number of drowning and near drowning incidents that occur in the UK every year, by showing people how to be safe near water.
Leisure operator Places for People Leisure will be holding the free sessions at the Pavilions In The Park, in Horsham, and Billingshurst Leisure Centres.
The first will be on Saturday June 27 from 5.00pm to 6.00pm at Billingshurst Leisure Centre.
There will also be two sessions held at the Pavilions on Sunday June 28.
The first will start at 10.30am and will finish at 11.30am with the second session starting straight after.
Over 400 people drown in the UK each year and drowning is the 3rd highest cause of accidental death of children in the UK.
Claire Matthews, contract swim development manager for Places for People said: “We’re pleased to be involved in this year’s RLSS campaign.
“The event comes at the perfect time of year, just before the Summer holidays, where lots of children are out and about near the water.
“Our sessions are designed to be informative and fun for children and they will take away some practical skills”.
Children wishing to take part must be between eight and 16 years of age, be able to swim 25 metres unaided and be confident in deep water. Places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting the centre.
