Fire at The Triangle leisure centre in Burgess Hill

Emergency crews have responded to a fire at The Triangle leisure centre in Burgess Hill this morning.

According to an eyewitness, a number of fire engines, ambulances and police cars were outside the leisure centre in Triangle Way after 10.30am.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said: “Joint Fire Control received reports of a fire in a leisure centre on Triangle Way in Burgess Hill at 10.28 this morning (Tuesday, October 27).

“Two fire engines from Burgess Hill and one from Haywards Heath were mobilised to the scene, and upon arrival found a fire in the plant room.

“The building was evacuated, utilities were isolated and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using one high pressure hose reel and CO2 extinguishers.

“They remained at the scene damping down and used a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further signs of fire.

“The fire is believed to have started accidentally.

“The last crew booked away from the scene at 12.33pm.”

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: “I can confirm we responded to reports of an injured person following reports of a fire at The Triangle at approximately 10.30am.

“Ambulance crews attended the scene and a man was assessed and treated for burns before being taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.”

Sussex Police added: “Police were called to assist other emergency services responding to a report of a fire in a boiler room at the Triangle Leisure Centre, Burgess Hill, at 10.30am on Tuesday (October 27).

“A workman suffered burns and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

“The centre was safely evacuated and no one else was hurt.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
